5 Signs You Need to Replace Your Air Conditioning Unit
Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Even with routine maintenance, there will eventually come a time when you’ll have to replace your air conditioning unit. The average life of an air conditioner is about 15 to 20 years. After that, you’ll start experiencing problems with your air conditioner. You may be tempted to keep your current unit by paying for small repairs instead of spending thousands of dollars on a new unit. However, we advise against this as even minor repairs can prove to be more costly if your unit keeps breaking down. So, if your air conditioning unit needs to be replaced, don’t sweat and buy a new unit.

Here are some signs that indicate you need to replace your current air conditioner:

1. Old Age

Is your air conditioner over 15 years old? If yes, it means that it’s past its average lifetime. Like people, air conditioners also start experiencing more issues as they age. If your air conditioner is breaking down more frequently, it may be because of its old age. So, instead of wasting your dollars on frequent repairs, it would be better to get a new unit.

2. High Utility Bills

If your utility bills have suddenly spiked while your electricity usage is the same, there could be an issue with your air conditioner. Your unit may be drawing more power to keep your home cool. It is best to have an experienced technician look at the problem. If your air condition unit is to blame for rising utility bills, you may not have any other option but to have it replaced.

3. No Cold Air

It can be frustrating when your air conditioner stops blowing cold air. Sometimes a small problem like a broken compressor can be the reason behind this. However, in rare case, a major underlying issue can cause the air conditioning unit to stop blowing cold air. You should call a technician to check what’s causing the problem. Replacement may not be warranted if the issue can be fixed with simple repairs.

4. Leakage and Moisture

If you notice small pools of water around your air conditioning unit, you should have your unit checked. Replacement may be required if a major issue is causing the problem.

5. Strange Noises

A gentle sound that generally comes from your air conditioner is harmless and normal. However, if your air conditioner makes a banging, rattling, grinding, whining, or clicking noise, then you likely have broken or loose parts. Make sure to have your unit checked. You may have to replace your unit if wear and tear has caused the issue or if your air conditioner is too old.

This should give you an idea about when you should replace your air conditioning unit. If you need a professional’s help to determine if a replacement is required, call Crane Heating and Air to check your unit.
