6 Things You Can Do When Your Air Conditioner Breaks Down
Posted By:
Wednesday, March 13, 2019

A broken air conditioner is one of the most nagging inconveniences one can experience in the summer months. The bad thing about it is that an air conditioner always breaks down at the worst possible time – like the hottest day of the month. An HVAC technician will likely take a few hours to arrive at your doorstep and a couple more to get your unit running again.

How will you cope with the scorching heat without a working air conditioner? Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make the heat somewhat bearable.

1. Drink Cold Beverages

Drink plenty of cold water and fruit juices to stay well-hydrated. Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these beverages remove moisture from the body and will only make things harder for you.

2. Bring Down the Curtains

During the day, sunlight may come through the windows and create a greenhouse effect in your home. Even when the windows are closed, sunlight can still significantly increase your home’s temperature. So, bring down the curtains and close the blinds to block sunlight from entering your home. This would lessen the effects of the heat.

3. Natural Cooling

When the sun sets, temperature drops. So, don’t keep your windows closed at night. Open them up to allow the heat trapped inside your home out. The heat will leave your home and cooler air will enter, bringing the mercury down inside your home.

4. Use Towels

Grab a few towels and put them in a bucket of cold water. Place one towel around your neck. The veins in your neck will signal the brain of the cold sensation and you will feel slightly cooler. After the towel has lost its coolness, take it off, pick up another one from the bucket and place it on your neck again.

5. Try Going Out

It isn’t necessary for you to ‘Netflix and chill’ all the time. After all, with broken AC, the ‘chill part’ isn’t there anymore. You can go out while an HVAC technician fixes your air conditioning unit. Head to the pool or the beach, eat at a restaurant or visit your friends or relatives.

6. Avoid Heat Generating Devices

Some electronic appliances generate heat. If your air conditioning unit is broken and the HVAC technician is taking some time to arrive, it’s best to avoid using such appliances. Instead of using the oven or stove for cooking, try an outdoor grill. Avoid using the microwave, the dryer and the washer as well. When lights are not in use, turn them off.

While you wait for your air conditioning unit to be fixed, take these steps to cope with the heat. Moreover, don’t attempt to fix your air conditioning unit on your own. You may only make the matter worse, so be patient and wait for the professionals to arrive and do their magic.
