How Dry Leaves Affect the Performance of Your HVAC System
Wednesday, November 14, 2018

With the winter season right around the corner, you must prepare the outdoor unit of your HVAC system for the change in weather. One of the biggest threats to your system in the fall season is dry fallen leaves. It might sound a bit exaggerated that fallen leaves in the autumn season cause trouble to your HVAC system, but that’s true. That is why you need to be diligent about the protection of your outdoor HVAC unit.

This blog will explain to you how fallen leaves in your yard can prove to be a problem for your HVAC system and what you need to do to avoid any damage.

The Problem Caused by the Dry Fallen Leaves

The outdoor unit of your HVAC system contains the compressor and condenser coil that is responsible for expelling the latent heat that is collected from the inside of your house. In order to accomplish this task, the outdoor unit of an HVAC system uses a powerful fan that draws cool air from the bottom and sides of the HVAC unit and uses it to expel the warm air through the vents located at the top of the outdoor HVAC unit.

If you’re able to understand how the outdoor unit of an HVAC system works, it will be easy for you to see how dry fallen leaves can complicate things. Autumn leaves that pile up at the bottom of the HVAC unit choke the crucial airflow, which makes it difficult for your HVAC unit to disperse the collected latent heat. And that’s not it. Blockages caused by fallen leaves can result in a considerable decline in the efficiency of your HVAC system, making it consume more energy and affecting its performance. Moreover, such airflow blockages can damage the parts of your HVAC unit, including the compressor and condenser coil.

How to Keep Your HVAC System Safe

In order to protect your HVAC unit from fallen leaves this fall, you can take the following protective steps:
  • Rake the dry leaves regularly and put them in a bag to make sure that the wind does not blow them near the outdoor HVAC unit.
  • Inspect and clean the outdoor HVAC unit thoroughly. If you don’t have a blower to blow away all the leaves and debris, call an HVAC technician right away.
  • Use an HVAC cover to keep the outdoor unit protected when it’s not in use.
If you’re experiencing any problems with your HVAC system or if you think that the outdoor HVAC unit needs maintenance, you can call in a professional HVAC technician and get the unit cleaned and serviced. Contact Crane Heating & Air for your convenience. Our experienced technicians will not only maintain your HVAC system but will also give you useful tips to keep your HVAC unit safe during the fall.
