Putting Your Home in "Vacation Mode"
Sunday, August 13, 2017
Planning on a fall vacation or just want to get away for the weekend? Here are a few energy saving tips on how to prepare your home and save some money before you head out on the road.
Adjust the thermostat: Take a look at the weather forecast before you leave and set your thermostat accordingly. If it looks like it’s going to be warm, setting the temperature around 85 degrees should do the trick.
Unplug electrical equipment: Before you lock the door behind you, make sure to unplug all electronic devices in your home. That means TVs, entertainment systems, gaming consoles, kitchen appliances, and computers. All of these things will still draw power even though they may not be in use. Tip: By plugging everything into power strips, their power can easily be switched off before you leave.
Turn off the lights: This one should be fairly self-explanatory, but turning off the lights in your home will save a ton of energy. If keeping a few lights on for security reasons is important to you, think about connecting them to programmable timers.
Turn off the water heater: If you’re going to be gone for a while, consider turning the water heater off. For electric heaters, switch it off at the circuit breaker panel. For gas heaters, turn the heat setting down to “low.”
Enjoy your vacation: By taking these steps you’ll have the peace of mind to know your being as energy-efficient as possible while you’re away from home!
