Scrooge Reimagined with Warmth

Ah. The wonder of modern conveniences. As the chill of winter moves in, we’re thankful that the press of a button or a tap on a phone app gives us instant heat. An electric mechanism does in seconds what took considerable time and effort in the past – chopping wood or shoveling coal, then building a fire on a cold morning and stoking it throughout the day. Would Scrooge have been as miserable if it were as easy in the 1800s as it is now?

During his time, coal was the main source of heat. Dickens would have us believe that Scrooge refused to buy coal to keep poor Bob Cratchit warm because he was miserly. Maybe he just hated all the work, not to mention the coal dust.

Coal surpassed wood as the primary fuel in the U.S. around 1885. The black chunks were delivered to homes by cart and, later, by truck and stored in basements in piles. Today, more than half the nation heats with natural gas, 10% use oil or propane, and the rest use electricity. Regardless of the fuel, we get off easy – no frosty morning fire-building and no black dust.

So, as you hop out of bed on a cold winter’s day and you feel the warm air blowing through the vents, remember poor Scrooge. If he’d had a furnace like yours, instead of saying, “Bah humbug,” maybe he would’ve just said, “Ah.”
