Why Is Your Air Conditioning Unit Leaking Water Inside?
Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Sometimes air conditioners start to leak water inside the premises. There could be many causes of this issue – broken condensate pump, damaged or rusted pan and dirty air filter. Before you start diagnosing your air conditioner, it is important to turn the thermostat ‘off’ to prevent the damage from escalating.

In order for you to understand why the air conditioner is leaking, it’s important for you to know how water is formed in the air conditioner unit.

How Water Is Formed in an Air Conditioner?

The inside unit of an air conditioner has an evaporator coil, the purpose of which is to cool the warm air blowing over it. This process causes condensation or moisture to form on coil. The moisture then drips into drain pan and then flows out of the home through a condensate drain line. Now that you understand how water is formed in your unit, let’s tell you why your air conditioner might be leaking water inside your home.

Cause #1: Condensate Drain Line Is Clogged

Most times, water starts leaking from the air conditioner into the home because the condensate drain line is clogged. Dust, mold, sludge or dirt can clog the line, thereby causing the water to back up into your house. If that is the case, you’ll have to unclog the condensate drain line. There are several unclogging methods you can use. However, it’s best to leave the job to a professional as they have special vacuums for sucking the blockage materials out.

Cause #2: Damaged or Rusted Drain Pan

The average lifetime of an air conditioner is 15 to 20 years. If your air conditioner is over 15 years of age, the problem could be with your drain pan. The drain pan can get rusted or damaged over time. When that happens, water goes through it and into your home. Thus, you’ll have to replace your drain pan.

Cause #3: Air Filter Is Dirty

If your air filter is dirty, it’ll block air flow over your air conditioner’s evaporator coil. In that case, your evaporator coil will get too cold and freeze over. When the ice melts, a large quantity of amount will start to drip and the drain pan might not be able to hold it. If your air conditioner is leaking, check the air filter and if it is dirty, change it.

Cause #4: Low Refrigerant

The pressure in your air conditioning unit may get low when the refrigerant is low. This can cause evaporator coil of the unit to freeze. Water will overflow the pan when the ice over the unit’s coil melts. Some signs that indicate your refrigerant is low include:
  • Air conditioner is not cooling well
  • A bubbling or hissing noise is coming from your air conditioning unit
If you can’t figure out what’s causing the leak, call Crane Heating and Air to help you out. Our technicians will determine the cause of the leak and fix the issue to ensure that it doesn’t damage your home.
