Why You Might Have a Temperature Difference Between 2 Floors
Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Commonly, families that tend to live in a two-floor house tend to experience this temperature difference issue. What you experience at that point is simply the convectional current of air. The rule states that hot air always replaces cold air. This is because hot air is lighter therefore it moves up whereas cold air is denser which is why it moves down.

Reasons for Temperature Variances

To prevent facing a situation like this, you can make adjustments to your thermostat which would counter the problem. Here are the two reasons that keep the difference between the two sides of your house varying. Mastering these two main issues would basically ensure your HVAC system is perfectly adapted to your home. Without further ado, here are the two main reasons for the temperature difference between the two levels of your home:

Your Vent System Is Incapable of Serving Both Floors Simultaneously

When your HVAC system is not able to maintain the same temperature upstairs and downstairs, you end up with these inconsistent temperatures between the two floors. Professionally, the best thing to do here would be to use a zoned heating (or cooling) system. This keep the balance maintained between temperatures on both floors in your home, thus solving this issue.

A zoned system is basically a unit that ensures that different parts of your house get different temperatures. This is basically adjustable as the zones would separate the home into two floors or segments. This would mean that the upstairs and downstairs floors would be able to sustain different temperatures by themselves. A typical zoning system can be implemented in two ways, both ensure your house stays cooled and heated thoroughly.

Multiple Thermostats

A thermostat is usually installed in both the zones. This is basically done to assist you control your air ducts’ electronic dampers. This can set your upstairs thermostat to cool the hot temperature while simultaneously signaling the one downstairs to heat up that floor. This would therefore ensure there is a uniform temperature around the house.

Electronic Dampers in the Ducts

The second option here would be to install electronic dampers in your ducts. These electronic dampers in the ducts would be valves designed to open and close intermittently. This would be helpful in regulating the flow of air in your home.

You Have Leaking Air Ducts

These could be just as much of a reason for cooled or heated air lost as any. Usually this is a basic thing which people don’t realize causes them to lose cold and hot air with.

Imagine the air ducts which are linked to your upstairs floor starts leaking. This would mean that they would malfunction; causing the upstairs to heat up rather than cool down. This would mean your ducts are leaking which can become a serious concern. The most sensible thing to do here is to replace them.
